Is it Universalism - or is it White Privilege?

PEGI EYERS

2021 Parliament of the World's Religions

This recording of the break-out session by Pegi Eyers, author of Ancient Spirit Rising, followed "Plenary 2: Hope and Inspiration."  Join the conversation as we take a new look at spiritual paths we have normalized, in today’s polyglot world of religious expression. Many of the practices we take for granted have only been made possible by white privilege, and in recent decades, by an unfortunate breach of cultural boundaries. Do members of the dominant society – white people – really need to make Kemetism, vodun, hoodoo, curanderismo, ayahuasca, shamanism, yoga and even Buddhism our own, and bypass the treasures in our own ethnocultures?

Destructive forces such as colonialism, capitalism, globalization and homogeneity have made it appear that religions and spiritualities are “universal” but this is not necessarily so. Once we understand the truth of our own positionality and the oppressor-oppressed dynamic, we are able to embrace spiritualities that do not harm other cultures. In an era of hopeful spiritual recovery for ALL people decimated by Empire, white folks can choose to make space, and refrain from placing ourselves at the center. These themes may be uncomfortable as awareness dawns, but by respecting the spirituality of all people we will find our most authentic soul expressions, and truly come together in our “Unity in Diversity!”

Decolonizing the Psyche

VIDEO PODCAST BY PEGI EYERS

Decolonization starts off as an individual practice, but it is important to quickly move forward in solidarity with our communities and/or chosen kinship groups. Hopefully these discussions will lead to a fuller inventory of unlearning, and to new thinking, gestures and actions that reflect our responsibilities to equity, social justice & Earth Community.
VIDEO PODCAST BY PEGI EYERS ~ JULY 11, 2020

Decolonizing the Psyche is a video podcast by Pegi Eyers on the patterns in thinking and behavior that we have inherited from western society (primarily capitalism), and how to shift from western mind to eco-mind.

Due to sound issues in the recording, sections of the talk are reproduced here:

#2 Reject the impact of commercialism on your identity formation. From the capitalist paradigm we have internalized the key principle that wealth and fame equals worth, but this is an illusion resulting from the absence of true connection and the sacred in our lives.
#3 Reject the impact of commercialism on your spiritual life.  Any society that needs to constantly revise or re-create a spiritual practice, or 'pay to pray,' has blended their priories into a strange new world.
Embrace the Sacred.  As a result of materialism, we have lost the ability to realize the world through a spiritual lens, and this disconnect means we are constantly seeking to understand the meaning of life over and over again.

Adopting Indigenous Rituals: a Triple-Edged Sword

RHIAN DANIEL
Canadian Ecopsychology Network (CEN)

As presented by Rhian Daniel PhD, this talk is a wonderful journey from understanding cultural appropriation to reclaiming the treasures in our own European heritage.  There is no reason why the ancient riches in our European Indigenous Knowledge (EIK) cannot be used as a template for creating rituals relevant to our lives and communities today, and to celebrate and honor the cycles of nature. Ancient Spirit Rising and the work of Pegi Eyers is referenced in the video.

White privilege and entitlement has given us the erroneous idea that we can choose any path we want from any part of the world, and the attraction to our own ancestral roots is not particularly strong.  We need to sit down and have a spiritual conversation with our DNA!

'Canada' and 'USA' are white supremacist capitalist fantasies that have nothing to do with earth-connection, and in turn, have created a populace that has stronger ties to regional or national identity than to the land itself.

This amazing song by performer Adhamh Roland touches on the loss of cultural identity, white amnesia, our European homelands and Settler-Colonialism in the building of Empire in the Americas.  Adhamh was inspired by his experience with the Before We Were White workshop series. "Many thanks to Eleanor Hancock and Darcy Ottey for your skillful guidance. Gratitude for the words and wisdom of Pegi Eyers, Lyla June Johnston, Derek Rasmussen, Tad Hargrave and David Dean: and to my co-journeyers around the world, especially Laurel C Smith and Molly James."

Exciting news - our proposal was accepted by the Parliament of the World's Religions in Toronto! Dr. Susana Bustos, Alice Olsen Williams/Minaachimo-Kwe, Dr. Sharon Mijares and Pegi Eyers presented a panel on traditional eco-knowledge and the revival of ancestral roots across cultural lines.  In this video, we feature an amazing moment, as the legendary Stanley Krippner praises our panel and comments on the ongoing white supremacy (presence of Eurasian religions) at the Parliament of the World’s Religions. We were all in agreement on how much work still needs to be done, to dismantle the patriarchy and empower the Indigenous People of the World.
